How to Improve Audio Quality Before You Transcribe

The single best way to improve a transcript is to improve the recording. Most errors come from noise, echo, and distance rather than from the AI itself.
Record it right
- Keep the microphone 15 to 30 centimeters from the speaker.
- Choose a quiet room and switch off fans, air conditioners, and notifications.
- Soft surfaces such as curtains, carpets, and sofas reduce echo.
- Avoid recording in the wind, and cover the microphone with a foam cap outdoors.
- Do a ten second test and listen with headphones before the real recording.
Clean up an existing file
- Open it in a free editor such as Audacity.
- Trim long silences, intros, and music.
- Apply gentle noise reduction using a sample of background noise.
- Normalize the volume so quiet speakers are not lost.
- Export as mono MP3 or WAV.
Do not over-process
Heavy noise reduction can create a watery, robotic sound that confuses recognition more than the original noise did. If the cleaned file sounds unnatural, use a milder setting or transcribe the original.
Quick checklist
Close microphone, quiet room, one speaker at a time, correct language selected, and a file under the size limit. Meeting these five points fixes most accuracy complaints before you press Transcribe.
